End of support dates for accounting firm servers and software

Which of our computers and servers have stopped getting updates?

Nothing breaks on the day support ends, which is exactly why it is easy to miss. Here are the dates that matter, what good looks like, and what we do.

The risk after a support date

A firm has a server that was installed years ago and has run quietly ever since. A few office computers are just as old and still do the job. Then a support date passes. Nothing looks different on Monday. But the vendor has stopped sending security fixes, and the next time a new weakness is found, there is nothing to install. Often it comes up at the worst moment: a tax program update that lists the Windows versions it supports, or an insurance form that asks which systems are still supported.

Good looks like a living inventory of what you run, a plan made early, and big changes done in a quiet week after a tested backup, not in tax season.

We make the list with you and plan the move. For the shared stack (Hyper-V, RAID 10, Meraki, Huntress, MFA and backups), see the accounting IT support overview and why firms run servers on Hyper-V.

Dates that matter, and how we help

As of October 2026. Dates can change, so we confirm current status with you.

  • Windows 10 and Office 2019. Support ended on October 14, 2025. Paid Extended Security Updates can extend Windows 10 coverage. Microsoft’s published ESU dates run to October 13, 2026 for consumers and as far as October 10, 2028 for commercial customers. Microsoft lifecycle notice.
  • Windows Server 2016. Extended support ends on January 12, 2027. Microsoft offers paid Extended Security Updates for up to three years after that, covering Critical and Important security fixes only. Eligibility and price depend on how your licences are held. If you need more time, we can help you get extended updates for as long as Microsoft offers them. They are a bridge while you plan a move, not a permanent answer.
  • QuickBooks Desktop 2023. No support, security updates, payroll or bank services after May 31, 2026 in Canada. Desktop 2024 has no announced end date. Intuit Canada’s policy.
  • An inventory you keep current. Which computers, servers and software versions you have, and which are still supported.
  • Kept patched and protected. While a system is still supported, we keep it patched. New computers get disk encryption on by default, unless your software vendor says otherwise.
  • Licences. We are a Microsoft Solutions Partner and resell Microsoft licences through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program, both direct and indirect.
  • A calmer server upgrade. On Hyper-V a new server can be built next to the old one and cut over in a planned window, instead of upgrading in place. Always after a tested Veeam backup. Why Hyper-V.

Tax software lists the Windows versions it supports, and an unsupported system can mean unsupported tax software too. See ProFile and Taxprep.

End of support questions we hear

Is it dangerous to keep using something that is out of support?

It carries more risk over time, because new weaknesses no longer get fixes. How much risk depends on what the system does and what else protects it. We will tell you plainly where the risk is and what the options are.

Can we pay to keep a system supported for longer?

Sometimes. Microsoft offers paid Extended Security Updates for certain products, with conditions. For Windows Server 2016 we can help you get them for as long as Microsoft offers them. They are a bridge while you plan a move, not a permanent answer. Ask us what applies to your licences.

Do we have to upgrade in tax season?

Rarely a good idea. We would rather plan big changes for a quiet week, after a tested backup, and after checking with your software vendors.
