Why accounting firms should run their servers on Hyper-V
Why accounting firms should run their servers on Hyper-V
Tax season is the wrong time to find out a single server cannot be recovered quickly. Hyper-V gives your firm a safer way to run its file, accounting and tax servers.

What Hyper-V means for an accounting firm
Hyper-V is Microsoft’s virtualization technology, built into Windows Server. It lets one physical server run one or more virtual machines, each behaving like its own server and stored as files that can be backed up and moved. Firms often depend on a file server, QuickBooks or Sage, tax software and sometimes an ERP server. Running those on one physical host ties all that work to a single machine.
Good looks like each role in its own virtual machine, a tested backup that can bring a server back in under 2 hours if the host fails, and a quiet week to try an update on a copy before busy season. RAID 10 means one failed drive does not stop the firm. It does not mean the server comes back on other hardware. If the server itself fails, we restore it in under 2 hours.
Hyper-V does not remove every risk, and we do not promise zero downtime. A checkpoint is a short lived way back, not a backup. You still need tested backups, kept offsite.
How we lay it out
- At least 2 virtual servers. One handles who is allowed to sign in (the domain controller). The other is a dedicated app server for your software. We never run applications on the domain controller. One domain controller is our usual setup. If you cannot tolerate any downtime, we offer a second one. Your call.
- Test before busy season. A copy of a virtual machine can be started in a test setting, so an update can be tried before it touches live client work. Upgrades and moves can then be planned for a quiet week.
- Check with your software vendors first. Ask your accounting and tax software vendors whether they support running on a virtual machine, and what they require. We coordinate with them before anything changes, take and test a backup first, and plan the work around your business hours. Benson Hunt is independent IT support, not the software vendor.
- Licensing in plain words. We support Hyper-V on Windows Server 2019 through the current release (as of 2026). We license Windows Server Standard or Datacenter to cover the virtual servers. People and devices that connect also need access licenses (CALs), and remote desktop sessions need their own RDS CALs. We confirm exactly what you need. Licensing as of October 2026.
- Backups still matter. Server backups run on Veeam and follow the 3-2-1 rule, stay immutable for 30 days, keep an offsite copy in Vancouver, BC, and we test restores. If a server itself fails, we restore it in under 2 hours.

Hyper-V questions we hear
Is a checkpoint the same as a backup?
No. A checkpoint is a short lived restore point on the same host, taken just before a change and removed once the change is confirmed. Microsoft advises against using checkpoints as a permanent recovery solution. You still need separate backups kept offsite, with test restores.
Will QuickBooks, Sage or our tax software work on a virtual machine?
Often yes, but ask each software vendor about their requirements. We coordinate with the vendors before anything changes.
Can our existing server be moved to Hyper-V?
Often it can, either by converting the existing server or by building a new virtual machine and moving the software across. We review your server, take a tested backup first and plan the work around your business hours. Ask us about yours.
Does RAID 10 mean the server comes back on other hardware?
No. RAID 10 means one failed drive does not stop the firm. If the server itself fails, we restore it in under 2 hours from backup.
