Why manufacturers should run their servers on Hyper-V
Why manufacturers should run their servers on Hyper-V
When the ERP server stops, the floor feels it. Hyper-V gives a plant a safer way to run ERP, warehouse and file servers, with a faster way back when something goes wrong.

What Hyper-V means for a manufacturer
Hyper-V is Microsoft’s virtualization technology, built into Windows Server. It lets one physical server run one or more virtual machines, each behaving like its own server and stored as files that can be backed up and moved. ERP and warehouse systems often rely on local servers for databases, integrations, label printing and scanners. Running those directly on one physical host ties the whole operation to a single machine.
Good looks like each role in its own virtual machine, production systems on their own VLAN away from office traffic, and a tested backup. If the host fails, we restore the server from local storage in under 2 hours.
Hyper-V does not remove every risk, and we do not promise zero downtime.
How we lay it out for a plant
- At least 2 virtual servers. One is the domain controller, which handles who can sign in. The other is a dedicated app server for your software. We never run applications on the domain controller. One domain controller is our usual setup, and we offer a second if you can’t tolerate any downtime.
- Keep the plant network apart. Many plants keep production equipment on its own VLAN, away from the office network. Each virtual machine can sit on the right VLAN too.
- Check with your ERP and WMS vendors first. We work with systems such as NetSuite, NextERP, Sage ERP, Sage MRP, Accellos WMS and HighJump (Accellos and HighJump are now part of Körber). Ask each vendor whether they support a virtual machine and what they need. We coordinate with them, take and test a backup first, and plan the work around production. We’re independent IT support, not the software vendor.
- Licensing in plain words. We support Hyper-V on Windows Server 2019 and newer. Windows Server Standard or Datacenter covers the virtual servers. People and devices that connect also need access licences (CALs), and remote desktop sessions need their own RDS CALs. We confirm exactly what you need. Licensing as of October 2026.
- Backups still matter. Server backups run on Veeam and follow the 3-2-1 rule, with an encrypted offsite copy in Vancouver, BC, locked for 30 days (immutable). We test restores.

Hyper-V questions we hear
Is a checkpoint the same as a backup?
No. A checkpoint is a short lived restore point on the same host, taken just before a change and removed once the change is confirmed. Microsoft advises against using checkpoints as a permanent recovery solution. You still need separate backups kept offsite, with test restores.
Can our existing server be moved to Hyper-V?
Often it can, either by converting the existing server or by building a new virtual machine and moving the software across. We review your server, take a tested backup first and plan the work around production. Ask us about yours.
Does RAID 10 mean the server comes back on other hardware?
No. RAID 10 means one failed drive does not stop the plant. If the server itself fails, we restore it from backup.
